Engineers at the University of Singapore are researching the possibility of manufacturing human spare parts, such as “human tissue, bone, ligaments, nerves and even extra-strong fillings for decaying teeth.” Some of the parts have been successfully created in laboratory experiments and are awaiting clinical testing.

US Drafting Asteroid Defense Plant

The US government is calling together scientists to draft a plan to combat asteroids. I think this is a great step in the right direction for foresight.

Self-styled super-hero convicted of arson

A skeleton mask and body armor clad man calling himself the Phantom Patriot raided the annual Bohemian Grove retreat and set fire to one of its cafeterias. The retreat, a secretive gathering of some of America’s most powerful men, has long been a popular conspiracy theory subject. The man said he suspected the group of being involved in child sacrifice. He was convicted of arson, assult, and brandishing a weopon. Anyone heard of anything else like this happening?

Macabre Artist Underfire for Insensitivity

Gunther von Hagens, an anatomical artist known for his exhibits featuring human corpses, is under fire in the UK for his current exhibit. The families of the Alder Hey scandal victims claim that the exhibit is “an insult to the Alder Hey families and to the memories of their children.” But the show’s organizers plan to follow through with the exhibit anyway. In his defense, Hagens said:

I treat the living and the dead with respect. All the whole body specimens come from people who have donated to the Plastination Institute and said we can exhibit. This is the democratisation of anatomy. Lay people, not just scientists, can see specimens aesthetically presented. They notice the wonder of life and creation and are not haunted by the images of death and decay you see in horror films.

Caveman living in New York City

The New York Post reports that Ecuadoran immigrant Omar Torrez has been living in a cave in Inwood Hill Park. He’s been hiding so well that “a Parks Department worker leading 20 children on a tour through the caves yesterday never noticed Torrez’s possessions in the 15-foot-deep tunnel.” As facisnating as this is, I question the Post’s coverage of this story. Isn’t this going to lead the Park Department to find and evict Torrez?
