Hope this puts an end to some of the speculation:
Douglas Brinkley, a historian and author who has edited some of Thompson’s work, said the founder of “gonzo” journalism shot himself Sunday night after weeks of pain from a host of physical problems that included a broken leg and a hip replacement.
[…]
Thompson, famous for “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and other works of New Journalism, spent an intimate weekend with his son, Juan, daughter-in-law, Jennifer, and young grandson, William, the spokesman said.
I hope they can work this out
The family is looking into whether Thompson’s cremated remains can be blasted out of a cannon, a wish the gun-loving writer often expressed, Brinkley said.
CNN: Thompson probably planned suicide
Via Poppy Z. Brite, who says Thomspon seemed “physically very wrong” when she met him a month ago.
Looks great.

Hunter S. Thompson is dead. I shouldn’t be surprised, but I just can’t wrap my head around this. I’m in shock.
While poking around the Hyperstition archives looking for something else, I’ve found Reza explaining an Islamic Middle Eastern hypersigil technique (which also happens to be the inspiration for the Japanese novel and film Ringu).
Update: I haven’t found any other reference to this technique… Did Reza make this up? Anyway, could be an effective for anyone willing to mess with such a potentially damaging technique.

Update: Reza provides more info here.
Holy damn! One of my favorite authors finally has an official English web site.

So I was thinking I’d rather have my scrotum pierced with a rusty nail than go back to work this morning. Except that no one would pay me to pierce my scrotum. At least not as much as work pays me.
Then I was thinking, didn’t the late Bob Flanagan get paid to do that sort of thing? So I took a look at a couple Flanagan web sites and… well, there’s nothing like good old Bob to remind you that your job (and life) ain’t so bad. Happy Monday.
Bob Flanagan Pain Journal with a bio
Bob Flanagan has some pics.
Of course there’s also Sick: the Life and Death of Bob Flanagan on DVD and the book Bob Flanagan: Supermasochist. If you’re into that sort of thing, I’ll leave it to you to find them.
Update: Big thanks to Mad Ghoul for his sponsorship =)
As many of you know, I just moved last month. What you might not know is, I’m pretty broke right now. I just had to renew the klintron.com domain name, which cost me $12.95, which may not sound like a lot, but is quite a lot to me right now. So the first person who paypals me (klintfinley at yahoo dot com) $12.95 will get a spot on the Technoccult sidebar listing them as a sponsor. I promise to keep this spot for 1 year.
(I’ll just decline subsequent Paypal payments)
