I have always believed that my period of most complete expression and appreciation would be my late future and beyond, in Time Phase X, the final phase of Modernism in the Western world. Time Phase X began on September 11, 2001, and will continue for the next one hundred years. My term for this period is “The Bauharoque.” It combines the heroic Modernism of the German Bauhaus, with its aspiration toward a technological Utopia, and the exalted theatricality of the Italian Baroque, in which an exuberance of form and illusion serve to express the mystical union of art and life.

Full Story: Hatch 23.

If you’re a fan of botanical architecture, this might just be the coolest building ever. Architects Minsuk Cho and Kisu Park of Mass Studies designed this flora-clothed multi-level building to house Belgian fashion designer Ann Demeulemeester’s store in Seoul, South Korea. The building was completed in October 2007 and takes green roofs and living walls to another level, using foliage to cover both the external and internal wall surfaces. We love that it looks as if the building is growing up from underneath the greenery, blurring the lines between plants as ornamentation or structure.

Baraka, by Ron Fricke

Baraka is an incredible journey through 6 continents, 24 countries. It is a collection of high quality images, presented in a moving and compelling manner. Hopefully everyone you know has seen it, but, if not, smoke a joint and sit down to one of the most beautiful pieces of cinema ever made. It’s a nice reminder seeing as how Fricke’s next piece – the spiritual successor to Baraka – called Samsara, is set to be released in 2007.

The Griffin & Sabine Trilogy Boxed Set, by Nick Bantock

Few books are more romantic than this trilogy, nor more surreal. The legendarily popular trilogy of books containing the Griffin-Sabine correspondence literally contains the correspondence: postcards, front and back, and letters in envelopes pasted into the book, which the reader must open and read. Nick Bantock’s story was way ahead of the computer game Myst, with which it shares a moody allure. His artwork is gorgeous, and countless romances have been intensified by exposure to that of Griffin and Sabine.

The Fab Tree Hab — a home literally made from trees, using an ancient technique called pleaching (the art of weaving (and sometimes grafting) trees together to form structures) — was one of the design entries for the Index: awards, emerging from the genius of a crew including MIT architect Mitchell Joachim and our friend, Javier Arbona of Archinect. The project description emphasized consideration of whole systems (and ecosystems) in creating a truly sustainable built environment, rather than a piecemeal approach that could yield uncertain longterm outcomes.

When those planes incinerated into ash against the two towers of western civilization the world began it’s rusty saunter towards a truly new day. Whether that day, which is creeping towards us with an increasing velocity, becomes one of never before imagined freedom or a crippling hiccup and recapitulation of a legacy of unbalanced power is yet to be seen, but coming to find answers as to who participated in what artist Paul Laffoley called “the end of post-modernism” may be a powerful initiatory step to rediscovering hope.

RG: The painting you’re working on now is about Lovecraft?

PL: It’s called “Pickman’s Mephitic Models,” based on the story. Certain things about it many people don’t realize. Pickman was a real painter who lived between 1888 and 1926. Now, there’s a question mark [gesturing toward the writing in the margins of the painting], because Lovecraft claims that he turned into a ghoul. God knows how old he is now.

He [Paul Laffoley] is becoming better known. There’s not really a short answer to that question. He should be hailed as one of our greatest geniuses, I think. It takes a long time for Paul to do a painting, and they’re really quite big. They’re six by six. They might take him about a year to finish, and by the time you’d have enough collected paintings for a one man gallery exhibit, you’re talking about ten years worth of work, so very often the paintings are sold as part of like a group show. He has had several solo shows and there have been books published on Paul, two of them. You know… because of things like my show, because of the [Disinformation] Interviews book, his own books, the big museum show he had in Texas, and most importantly, the Kent Gallery in NYC and its owner Douglas Walla being so completely behind Paul, his profile has been rising in recent years
