Study: Moderate Jogging Increases Longevity

From a press release regarding an as of yet unpublished study conducted over the past 36 years:

Undertaking regular jogging increases the life expectancy of men by 6.2 years and women by 5.6 years, reveals the latest data from the Copenhagen City Heart study presented at the EuroPRevent2012 meeting.

Reviewing the evidence of whether jogging is healthy or hazardous, Peter Schnohr told delegates that the study’s most recent analysis (unpublished) shows that between one and two-and-a-half hours of jogging per week at a “slow or average” pace delivers optimum benefits for longevity. […]

The debate over jogging first kicked off in the 1970s when middle aged men took an interest in the past-time. “After a few men died while out on a run, various newspapers suggested that jogging might be too strenuous for ordinary middle aged people,” recalled Schnohr.

European Society of Cardiology: Regular jogging shows dramatic increase in life expectancy

The press release doesn’t talk about how the study controlled for other health factors. Do joggers live longer than swimmers or cyclists? Did the joggers and non-joggers have otherwise similar health habits (diet, tobacco, etc.)?

  1. Your posts on here have been getting kinda dull lately. What’s up?

I don’t mean any disrespect by the way. I appreciate your site and the time you put in to it 🙂

    • Thanks for the feedback – I’m just posting the things that I find interesting on a day-to-day basis. What would you like to see more of?

  2. Hey don’t listen to me, what do I know? It’s your site and the important thing is you’re doing the things you like with it.

But as you’ve asked I guess I’d like to see some more cultural content about art, writing and music. Not mainstream though, more about what people are doing on the fringes and where the edges between different disciplines meet and intersect.

I used to like a lot of the occult stuff you had going here but I understand if you’re moving on from that to other interests. I do think there’s still a way of combining it though, in the way that John Michael Greer is doing and you might be interested in his book on peak oil and magic – http://www.scarletimprint.com/pdf/JMG%20The%20Blood%20of%20the%20Earth%20Introduction.pdf

I’ve enjoyed the interviews you’ve done with a wide range of different people so more of them would be cool too.

Anyway, I’ll stop now but thanks for listening 🙂

    • I’d like to do more culture stuff . Did you like the interview with Brandon Graham? I’m trying to find more contemporary “edge” artists, rather than just keeping on posting about the same few artists and thinkers (the people I’ve done dossiers on), but despite the fact that there’s whole big Internet of stuff out there, it can still be difficult to find people doing interesting things (that’s my “job” on this site though – to find and present interesting people, projects and ideas).

I don’t have much interest in the practice of magic/the occult these days (unless you count secular meditation/mindfulness practices), but I do still have an interest in historical occultural figures and movements (The Process Church, for example) so you’ll be seeing more of that sort of thing.
