Anti-OTO Website Lands Two In Jail

“Two Tucabia residents have been jailed for contempt of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and sentenced to nine months jail in Victoria after refusing to remove offensive material from their protest website. A warrant for the arrest of Vivienne Legg and Dyson Devine was issued on November 28, 2007 after a lengthy court battle was launched by Brent Gray and David Bottrill, members of a religion called Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO), in the State’s anti-discrimination court. The court found Legg and Devine guilty under the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act anti-discrimination legislation pertaining to racial and religious vilification after they published information on their website, gaiaguys.net.”

Thoughtcrime. If I lived in Australia, I have no doubt at all that my Web site would land me in court. Because people’s superstition is somehow above criticism in many countries.

I agree that this is pretty fucked. If the allegations are untrue, a normal defamation suit should have worked fine.

The Catholic Church operates international pedophilia ring. Would writing about it on the Internet in Australia land me in jail?

OTO did file a defamation suit and also filed complaints about religious vilification. The court found them guilty and ordered them to take down the material. The material didn’t get taken down, and this led to contempt, which for a variety of reasons was found deliberate. THAT is what got them jailed.

Come on, you guys could have all figured this out really easily. What is the problem?
