New translation of the Torah

Interesting:

A professor at the University of California at Berkeley, Alter says since he has never found a biblical translation that he liked or could recommend to his comparative literature students, he decided to do his own, starting with the story of Genesis and ending with the death of Moses.

  1. I have what’s usually referred to as a tri-linear, or inter-linear Bible. It has three bound lines of text within it’s pages: Hebrew; a word-for-word translation of the Hebrew into English; and a transliteration of the Hebrew into English. For the New Testment, it’s of course Greek and English.

This allows you to make your own judgements based on language. You would be suprised how a twenty line passage in this Bible is shaved down to maybe ten lines in the King James version.
