Love thy enemy

Alex Burns, in yesterday’s Disinfo newsletter:

It’s been a week for Evil: the first avowed Satanist in the British Navy, Yasser Arafat is ill, Abu Bakir Bashir again on trial. And then there’s that pesky ‘Solioonensius’—a time of cataclysms and wars (caused by 8000-year-old sunspots?). In such harsh conditions it’s easy to forget, as Texan author once reminded me, that Evil has its purposes for self-growth. ‘Dr. No’-like figures unsettle the hero’s world and drives hir forward on a transformative quest. Playing an Evil role consciously—is hard work—requiring a deep knowledge of conflict, human psychology and social norms. On a more personal level, understanding how our ‘enemies’ have impacted on our lives, including changes, opens the way to new insights.

The Secret Marriage of Art and Magick

Excellent essay by Angel Tech author Antero Alli:

Between words, music, and images, the human species’ enraged poetic imagination toils to rearrange the way we see, hear and feel the world: the way we end up living our lives. The efforts of these struggles are immense — imagine Jacob wrestling with the angel — and their effects, as fundamentally unstable as the high seas themselves. We are a culture dreaming itself — ourselves — into history, with as little as a song, a prayer, and a vision…and are entering that portal where almost anybody with enough commitment, courage and vision can step forth and join history, herstory, our story in the making. Whether it’s on the streets and/or incognito computerized virtual realities, the time has come for the chaotic emergence of the species’ own intuitive genius. How will we recognize it ? What will it look like and what will it do ? It transmits a dream more optimistic than the beats, more precise than the hippies, more dynamic than the new agers and more soulful than the bleak cyberpunks. What’s “it” ? All these occultural movements make up the groundwork of its unfoldment. What “it” is, however, is now up for grabs which makes IT all the more breath-taking, dangerous and alive.

Living brain in a jar

A University of Florida scientist has grown a living “brain” that can fly a simulated plane, giving scientists a novel way to observe how brain cells function as a network.

The “brain” — a collection of 25,000 living neurons, or nerve cells, taken from a rat’s brain and cultured inside a glass dish — gives scientists a unique real-time window into the brain at the cellular level. By watching the brain cells interact, scientists hope to understand what causes neural disorders such as epilepsy and to determine noninvasive ways to intervene.

UF SCIENTIST: “BRAIN” IN A DISH ACTS AS AUTOPILOT, LIVING COMPUTER.

I think pretty much everyone on the Cabal and maybe the rest of the blogosphere (haven’t been “out” much today, heh) is linking to this today. Can’t remember where I saw it first.

Hunter S. Thompson endorses Kerry

Hunter S. Thompson writes:

This year’s first presidential debate was such a disaster for George Bush that his handlers had to be crazy to let him get in the ring with John Kerry again. Yet Karl Rove let it happen, and we can only wonder why. But there is no doubt that the president has lost his nerve, and his career in the White House is finished. NO MAS.

[…]

Every GOP administration since 1952 has let the Military-Industrial Complex loot the Treasury and plunge the nation into debt on the excuse of a wartime economic emergency. Richard Nixon comes quickly to mind, along with Ronald Reagan and his ridiculous “trickle-down” theory of U.S. economic policy. If the Rich get Richer, the theory goes, before long their pots will overflow and somehow “trickle down” to the poor, who would rather eat scraps off the Bush family plates than eat nothing at all. Republicans have never approved of democracy, and they never will. It goes back to preindustrial America, when only white male property owners could vote.

Things haven’t changed all that much where George W. Bush comes from. Houston is a cruel and crazy town on a filthy river in East Texas with no zoning laws and a culture of sex, money and violence. It’s a shabby sprawling metropolis ruled by brazen women, crooked cops and super-rich pansexual cowboys who live by the code of the West — which can mean just about anything you need it to mean, in a pinch.

[…]

The question this year is not whether President Bush is acting more and more like the head of a fascist government but if the American people want it that way. That is what this election is all about. We are down to nut-cutting time, and millions of people are angry. They want a Regime Change.

[…]

Of course I will vote for John Kerry. I have known him for thirty years as a good man with a brave heart — which is more than even the president’s friends will tell you about George W. Bush, who is also an old acquaintance from the white-knuckle days of yesteryear. He is hated all over the world, including large parts of Texas, and he is taking us all down with him.

Woman tells her story of being married to Bigfoot

And now for something completely different:

A fantastic love story has been recently unveiled in St.Petersburg. Psychiatrist Nikolai Boyarchuk said that he had copied the text of the story from the file of a female patient. The doctor said that the story that happened to Oksana Terletskaya was absolutely real. He added that it would not be immoral to write about it in press, because the woman either died or she would never return to live with humans again.
