Matrix, Agitprop?

My favorite review of the new Matrix movie comes from Wiliam Blaze:

The Matrix Reloaded is out to shatter that trope and its far more effective at calling attention to the structures of power. Remember those hippie “Question Reality” bumper stickers? Well the Matrix is getting people to question reality on a scale that Timothy Leary couldn’t even dream of when high off his premium LSD + bullshit blend. The left has been content to release memes into their own marginal subcultures for far to long. The Matrix unleashes memes into the heart of pop culture. “Choice is an illusion created by those with power to control those without”, says the Merovingian and the Architect adds in: “nearly 99.9% of all test subjects accepted the program, as long as they were given a choice, even if they were only aware of the choice at a near unconscious level.”

And the cynical comments attached are just as interesting and insightful. “Here in the real world, the main result of The Matrix series will be a two billion dollar funds transfer from movie-goers (some who tend to be pretentious) to the AOL/Time-Warner Corporation. Nothing particularly left-wing or subversive in that.”

August: A Bad Time to be a Berkeley Grandmother

Every year thousands of students at UC Berkeley skip the first week of classes to go to Burning Man. Someone on the Burning Man announcements list has written a hilarious letter to his professors to get out of classes:

For the third time in three years, my grandmother is planning to die during the week leading into and including Labor Day. In fact, her funeral pyre will be lit at approximately 9 p.m. on Saturday, August 30th, at which time 30,000 of my closest friends will join me in mourning as her remains are charred into a 40 foot tall column of flame illuminating a moonless sky over the Nevada desert.

This, of course, means that I will miss the entirety of the first week of classes. As I have done in years past, I am writing this letter to ask that you hold my place in your class. I hope you, as many instructors have before, will show compassion and understanding for my week of grief and grant this highly unusual request.

DIY Psionic Devices

Ever wanted a Psionic Amplifying Helmet? Wanted to determine the amount of blue in a friend’s aura? Thanks to this site, you can now build your own psionic equipment using magnets and speaker wire and stuff. If anyone tries this stuff out, let me know how it works.

Autofellatio is the core icon to decode all religious metaphor

Glenn Scheper, woh describes himself as “an instance of an avatar; even in fact, the Lamb that was prophesied would appear to initiate a change of epoch” claims that:

Autofellatio is the core icon to decode all religious metaphor.

Although salient and simple, this icon remains obscure because:

1. Theologians lack an experience in this sacral erotic domain.
2. Few autofellators have reflected upon it and recognized god.
3. Cognizant experiencers are ostracized, mentally annihilated.
4. Expositors face taboos and produce only metaphysical poetry.
5. Religions are conflated from non-knowers’ defective eisegesis.

Headmap

Seems like everyone is talking about Headmap. It’s a pretty cool project, compiling research on how “location aware devices” can be used for social change. There’s a lot of information on this site, but I have a hard time reading the tiny, light grey font and the lack of text formatting makes the material hard to scan. Still, they’re doing well to compile large amounts of theory regarding place, magick, and technology. They’ve built a prototype of what they’re talking about, but it’s still very rough. So far it’s basically a map with links to web pages that deal with the places on the map. I think Hiptop Nation is more interesting right now, and it isn’t even trying to be any sort of revolutionary psychogeography tool.

Update: The Headmap site is gone, but I’ve preserved the Headmap Manifesto here

How to summon a Nuclear Elemental

“Why limit yourself to the basic elements when you can summon a Nuclear Elemental?” (Disclaimer: Technoccult does not encourage self-mutilation)

On the night of the ritual, go to the site you chose/found for it after consuming an ipecac (something vile that will make you throw up violently, grass mixed into mustard works, also toothpaste in peppermint ice cream, fruitloops and pork mixed into strawberry Quik, raw eggs combined with chocolate and rocks etc…) holding back the biliousness that is filling your stomach. If you can’t, then take the ipecac at the ritual making sure that you will vomit at the ritual.

Start a good sized fire underneath the high tension power lines, in the steel tubing structure, let it grow in strength of a good campfire. Walk away from the fire, letting your mind be filled with the fire and only the fire. Take the razors and stick them into your flesh, letting them jut there as you bleed on yourself. Consume the ipecac now if you haven’t already. Begin to chant anything. Close your eyes and begin visualization.

High-tech Implants Aren’t the Future of Body Modification

Body modification guru Shannon Larratt has written an editorial on Better Humans about implants. He argues that wearable and bio aware technologies are more practical, because implants will become obsolete quickly “a fate no self-respecting futurist ever wants to face.”

But let’s assume briefly that we have reached a point at which technology is relatively static in terms of the devices that we seek to implant. Now we have to ask the larger question: Why bother? After all, these gadgets could just as easily be wearable, with projects such as Isa Gordon and Jesse Jarrell’s Psymbiote being excellent examples.
